Carter: 10 Months

Monkey,
You are TEN MONTHS old today! Five-sixths of a year! Double digits! Not only does ten months sound so much older than nine months, you are really starting to act older this month, too! Your Daddy and I are blown away everyday by how big you've gotten and how much you can do and surprise us with everyday.  You truly are leaving all the "baby" behind and really starting to become a little boy.  Tear! It's so fun to see you learn new things, but I'm honestly so sad about you growing up and out of all the baby things.  I'll get over it, but I'd appreciate it if you will just slow down.

So much has changed for you in the past month it's been hard for us to keep up with everything.  We started by lowering your crib mattress to the lowest setting on the 3rd (and adding bumpers) because you were really starting to explore the crib and we knew pulling up wasn't far away.  We had been changing your clothes and diapers in your crib up until then (because you are a WILD man and need to be contained) so now you just sit on the floor.  Diapers changed have become a sporting event as you will NOT lay on your back for more than one second at a time.  I've changed diapers as you crawl around me, pull-up on the wall, or roll around while playing with your toys.  You are your Daddy made-over in the sitting-still department; neither of you are very good at it.  You are on the Go during all waking hours, and now that you are crawling (sprinting is more like it) you makes laps around the house as long as I will let you.  We honestly can't sit down for a second because as soon as we do you are speed-crawling into the next room.

On the 11th we moved you into your big-boy carseat and you LOVE IT! You still hate being buckled in, but as soon as you are settled you just start laughing and smiling until we've reached our destination and it's time to get out.  Your favorite part is we installed a mirror for you so you can see us and you spend most of the ride just talking and singing to us from the backseat.  You also love to stare out the window and the sunroof.  If you are ever cranky the mirror plays music and we turn the music on and you are instantly calmed down.  Best.purchase.ever.

For Mama's birthday on the 12th you drank out of a sippy cup for the first time! We have had your cup out for what feels like forever now and you would play with it and chew on the straw, but never drink out of it.  We finally gave-in and switched from a straw cup to a true sippy cup and you instantly started drinking.  Success!  We still try the straw cup everyday but you insist on just using it as a chew-toy for now.  I'm sure you will grow into it.

We've had a latchy catchy on your door since we moved you to your room, and it has truly been a life-saver.  Except now your big fur brother, Cooper, has figured out how to nudge the door with his nose and enter at-will.  In the middle of the night you would wake up crying, only for us to find Cooper in your room!! So we installed a baby gate Cooper gate outside the playroom that leads to your room to keep him out.  I never thought I would need a baby gate for our 100-pound dog, but it has worked perfectly and Cooper guards your gate while you nap and at night.

On St Patricks day when we got you together with your cousins you pulled-up for the first time!  Everyone told me it was coming and didn't believe you were close to pulling up, and you proved me wrong!  You went from all-fours to standing everywhere in the matter of a day.  Now you spend all your time going from one wall/couch/dog gate to the next pulling up and standing.  You've even started dancing! You won't do it on cue, but when the mood strikes you start busting a move all your own.  The dancer in your mama is so proud! Must be all the two-stepping we do in the kitchen at night.

Your Daddy and I have been practicing waving with you for awhile now and you have yet to catch on.  I *think* you waved back to me last night, but it also could have just been a coincidence.  Even though you haven't master the wave yet you can still flirt with strangers like no other.  I swear we spend a good chunk of time whenever we are out stopping to strangers can talk to you and marvel over how handsome you are.  I tend to agree with them :)

Right before your Auntie Sara's big day you got your first haircut! Your sides were getting a little long and hanging over your ears, so we just trimmed it a little.  You did so good while the stylist was working on you!

I'm hesitant to say for sure, but we are on the way to being a super napper.  Your nap problems of the past seem to be exactly that...the past.  You take about a 1-hour 15-minute nap in the morning, and almost 2 hours in the afternoon.  Yay Monkey! I'm not sure what changed, and we still have our bad days for sure, but you have definitely turned a corner.  This morning you even fell asleep in your highchair mid-bite! We used to rock to before your naps and at night but now you would rather just be put straight in your crib.  You go down so easily...only took us 10 months!! I will have to keep that in mind for our next baby when I'm stressing about naps and sleep.

You are nursing 3-4 times a day, although I feel like that will soon be just 3 times a day.  I had planned to wean you by your first birthday, but I'm honestly wondering if you will be ready in June.  You still LOVE to nurse and it's easily my favorite time of day.  Especially at night when you take your time and sometimes fall asleep in my arms...there's just nothing better than that bond we've created.

Along with nursing you are eating 3 meals and 1 snack each day.  Breakfast is still your favorite and dinner is very hit-or-miss.  You love your fruits more than your veggies (typical) and will eat as much yogurt as we will let you.  You have really taken off in the food department this month and would rather eat table food than anything pureed.  We are to the point where we just throw food on your tray and see what you will touch.  Just like your mom, if you have various foods on your tray you will eat them in groupings...all the fruits, then all the crackers, then all the veggies.  It's funny to see what you have inherited from us!  Speaking of, when you are in your high chair you constantly shake front-to-back to make your chair bounce around.  That's straight from Daddy...he can never sit still!

Although you still prefer to play next to Mama and Daddy, you are getting a little better at playing independently.  Now that you can move at-will you have started exploring more and showing interest in what all of your toys will do.  We are working on turning the second living room into a playroom for you so hopefully once we get that ready it will be the perfect room for you.

Monkey, monk, buddy boy, Carter Man, chunky butt...we can't even remember what life was like before you were here.  You make me and your Daddy so incredibly happy I don't know if I can ever fully explain it to you.  Without you I don't know how I would have lived the 6 weeks without your Daddy J.  You are my heart and soul, and I love you to pieces.  To the moon and back.
